Panel discussion: What can employers do to support those with endometriosis at work? Panellists: Emma Cox, CEO at Endometriosis UK Kathryn Pinner, Head of Marketing at Standard Life Shazia Ginai, CEO at Neuro Insight UK Ltd and Endometriosis UK Support Group Leader Inspector Lisa Ledder, Merseyside Police What is Endometriosis? Endometriosis is a disease where cells similar to the ones lining the womb are found elsewhere in the body, usually within the pelvic cavity. Each month these cells react to the menstrual cycle in the same way to those in the womb, building up and then breaking down and bleeding. Unlike the cells in the womb that leave the body as a period, this blood has no way to escape. This leads to inflammation, pain, and the formation of scar tissue (adhesions). The condition affects 1.5million in the UK; approximately 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth.
