It’s been a long time coming, but at last a trip out to see LNER A2 Pacific No. 60532 Blue Peter on a charter was made, as she hauled Saphos Trains ‘The Lakelander’ to Carlisle, its second railtour since returning from overhaul and, on the outward route, it would go solo with no diesel assistance. Starting out at Llandudno Junction under diesel haulage, the tour would head to Preston where the A2 would take over for the run up Shap to Carlisle. On the same day, a steam hauled Northern Belle, also heading to Carlisle, would run with diesel haulage from York to Carnforth where 34067 Tangmere would take over to Carlisle. Both tours were then originally due to head back south over the S&C, but with engineering works taking place, the tours would instead travel over the Cumbrian Coast line, which later in the day would come to grief from the presence of the tours. Beginning at Lancaster in the clear sunshine, the A2 is captured first, heading through the station at speed with a blast on its New Zealand chime whistle. Around 15 minutes later, the Northern Belle, still under diesel haulage, came through nearly half an hour down. Originally the NB was due first with the A2 some 9 minutes behind. Overtaking both tours while the NB swapped traction at Carnforth and the A2 took on water at Grayrigg, the next pair of shots come from Penrith, where the two steam tours passed around 5 minutes apart, firstly Blue Peter, followed by Tangmere. For the return trips over the Cumbrian coast, locations would have to be near Carlisle with Tangmere having a very short layover at the Great Border City. Lowry St was chosen, where Tangmere is captured in the sunshine sounding off beat as it powers away from Carlisle. Moving further west, the final shot of the day was to be Wigton for the A2. However, the performance was not to be as expected. As the A2 came into view, news came through that Tangmere had started a lineside fire near Nethertown. The A2 approached the station with a red signal, and the assumption was it would stop to be told of the fact. However, the signal then cleared, and the Pacific opened up, but not majorly, before coasting through the station and then opening up again once clear of the platform. The Class 37 on the rear, which had been attached at Carlisle to help turn the train and also assist on the return journey, due to the A2 having a number of gauging restrictions on the route, then powered into life on full throttle, with plenty of tones in the process. While the sound from the A2 wasn’t as hoped, the Class 37’s full charge made the shot worth including. However, the train would not get much further. Various other lineside fires up ahead started by Tangmere resulted in the Cumbrian Coast line being shut, and the Saphos charter returning back to Carlisle, where the A2 was removed from the train. The tour would then head back south via the WCML under diesel power. Tangmere would make it through the Cumbrian, but having left a lot of damage behind, as the entire line was closed following damange to vital railway equipment. •Facebook: / themodsterrailwayvideos
