The SS Virginia V was visited by the US Coast Guard for a training inspection. This is an opportunity for newer recruits to get hands-on experience inspecting a wooden-hulled ship. Commercial vessels in the US get annual inspections from the Coast Guard, and though there aren't too many wooden boats out there anymore, there's enough that it's important to know what to look for when inspecting them for safety and soundness. Getting to see a historic wooden ship in person and being able to run your hands over the wooden planks is an invaluable experience. We also hope it helps the local Coast Guard appreciate our historic vessel as we share some of the maritime history of the Puget Sound region. Of course, it's also fun to show off the steam plant to interested folks. We have only one of two inspected propulsion boilers in the whole district, and the only triple-expansion steam engine. The training inspection also benefits the ship, by finding any issues while there is still plenty of time for repairs to be made before the ship's actual final inspection.
