Mujahedin-e Khalq was the first Iranian organization to systematically develop a modern revolutionary interpretation of Islam that differed sharply from both the old conservative version of Islam of the traditional clergy and the new populist version formulated in the 1970’s by Ayatollah Khomeini and his disciples. Its original goal was to update and modernize the interpretation of Islam from its current radicalization. Today, the organization’s main focus is on human rights and respect for personal property.
