The DBX 128 is not a compressor you reach for for transparency and clarity. It is for taking overly polished soft synths like, in this case, the UVI Workstation Beatbox Anthology 2, and making them sound nasty. In this video you get a demo of the two spectrums: slammed drums that almost turn to compressed clicks and pop right out at you or slammed drums that sound gated and distorted (1:27), but the good kind of harmonic distortion. The kind that doesn’t come from pedals, but from abusing electronics meant for other things, like expanding compressed audio off of cassette tapes in your home hi fi system a million years ago, which is what these DBX comp/panders were for (I think).
