Kelvyn Koning, countertenor, composer, poet Emily Kaplan, flute Adam Gurczak, bass Lyrics: I. Torch Song For me it doesn’t take courage to dive into the unknown and offer my whole heart like a match, quick and powerful, because then if it goes out, at least I know I did everything in my control to create a spark. But what takes bravery for me is offering my whole heart like a candle and waiting to see if it gets lit, a fuse longing for a flame, hot and bright and steady and powerful in a different way. II. Impressions As I retrace our footprints, the sand sticks to my toes till the tide changes its length and I feel the cold rush of reality on my exposed skin. I try to outrun the water, laughing as I seek to escape its icy embrace, but nature is swifter than I. The waves wash away our shallow steps, so we let our feet fall deeper and slower, for the longer we leave an impression, the harder it is to erase. III. A Change in the Wind Some days I have cursed At the wind for not doing What I want it to. It made a cold day Seem colder, pushed me where I Didn’t want to go. But lately I’ve been Learning to let go so the Wind can do its work. And I feel caressed By the breeze, cooled by the air, Light, easy, and free. So the gentle push May not be a change in wind, But a change in me. IV. Ladybugs You won’t find ladybugs by looking for them; you have to let go and lie in the grass, and they will come to you.
