The Brock String Method at JJ Van Zyl Optometrists At JJ Van Zyl Optometrists, we value visual therapy as a powerful tool for improving binocular vision. One of our preferred exercises is the Brock string method, which patients can easily practice at home. We’ve developed a unique variation on the classic Brock string exercise to enhance its effectiveness. Visual Therapy and Spectacle Correction Visual therapy can sometimes be conducted independently, but in many cases, it follows the prescribing of a new set of spectacles. I often explain to patients that, much like how a bone must be set before physiotherapy can begin, certain eye issues, such as muscle imbalances or vertical misalignments, may require prism spectacles before visual therapy can be effective. Once the correct spectacles are in place, visual therapy becomes essential. Understanding Binocular Vision For patients with binocular vision (two functional eyes), it’s important to recognize that during normal vision, everything outside your focal point is seen as double. Problems arise when the eye muscles (motor system) and sensory input are not properly aligned, leading to visual confusion that the brain often suppresses without conscious awareness. The Brock string exercise helps retrain the brain to distinguish between "normal" and "abnormal" vision, encouraging proper binocular function. Preparing for the Brock String Exercise Begin by holding a pen or similar object at arm's length in front of your nose while focusing on a distant point. The goal is to see two images of the pen when focusing on the distant object. If you don’t, close one eye at a time to identify the positions of each image. Seeing two images when focusing far away indicates progress. The Objective of the Brock String Exercise The Brock string exercise is designed to create a biofeedback loop, helping the brain learn how the eye muscles and sensory system work together in real space. Holding the string or cord during the exercise provides tactile feedback, reinforcing the brain’s understanding of visual input. Performing the Brock String Exercise 1. Setup: Sit upright with a level head. Hold one end over your thumb with an outstretched arm and the other under your nose, with the string taut and centered. This setup ensures that when you look at your thumb, both eyes focus on the same point, teaching the brain how to align them correctly. 2. Seeing the "V": As you look at your thumb, you should see a "V" shape where the two strings converge into one. Each string corresponds to one eye—right for the left eye, and left for the right eye. If you see only one string, it means one eye is not functioning properly, and the brain has suppressed its input. 3. Training the Brain: Shift your focus between the distant point and your thumb, ensuring you see two strings becoming one at your thumb each time. This process teaches the brain to adjust the effort required by each eye to achieve proper alignment. 4. Building Endurance: Gradually increase the difficulty by moving your thumb closer to your nose, always ensuring you see two strings converging. This helps the brain develop depth perception, hand-eye coordination, and accurate judgment of speed and distance. Integrating with Other Visual Therapy The Brock string exercise is rarely used in isolation. At JJ Van Zyl Optometrists, we often combine it with other visual therapy exercises tailored to address specific visual problems, particularly after prescribing the appropriate corrective lenses. This comprehensive approach helps ensure that your visual system functions as efficiently and comfortably as possible. #VisualTherapy #BrockString #BinocularVision #VisionTraining #EyeExercises #OptometryCare #PrismSpectacles #EyeHealth #VisionImprovement #OptometristAdvice #DoubleVision #SensoryIntegration #VisionRehabilitation #TactileFeedback #DepthPerception #HandEyeCoordination #EyeMuscleStrength #VisionTherapyAtHome #FreeSpaceVision #NaturalVisionTherapy
