Spinosaurus vs Onchopristis: The River Hunt is a short cinematic interpretation of a prehistoric encounter that may have taken place nearly 95 million years ago. During the Late Cretaceous period, vast river systems stretched across what is now North Africa. These waters were home to some of the most unique and formidable creatures to ever exist. Among them was Spinosaurus, one of the largest known carnivorous dinosaurs, uniquely adapted for life both on land and in water. With its elongated jaws, conical teeth, and powerful swimming ability, Spinosaurus is widely believed to have been a specialized hunter of aquatic prey. Sharing these waters was Onchopristis, a giant sawfish-like creature equipped with a long, blade-like rostrum lined with sharp denticles. This prehistoric fish could grow several meters in length and likely used its “saw” to slash through schools of fish—or defend itself from predators. Fossil evidence, including worn and embedded rostrum fragments found alongside Spinosaurus remains, suggests that encounters between these two species may not have been uncommon. This film is inspired by those possibilities. ⸻ This piece was created as a personal project, sparked by a simple conversation at home. My daughters are big fans of Spinosaurus, and after adding a real Spinosaurus tooth to our collection, we started asking a simple question: What did it actually hunt? That question turned into this. Using modern creative tools, I set out to build a grounded, cinematic interpretation of what a hunt like this might have looked like—blending research, imagination, and storytelling into a visual experience meant to feel both immersive and believable. ⸻ This is not a documentary, but rather a visual exploration of a moment lost to time. ⸻ Created, directed, and produced by Julio Lucas Music: “The Proving Grounds” by Dragon Tamer © 2026 Julio Lucas.
