Araxa dog shelter Brazil - Abrigo Cao Feliz

Mariana has been looking after abandoned dogs for more than 20 years. In 2017 in response to the growing number of street dogs, she and her husband built the Abrigo Cao Feliz dog shelter in Araxa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This project was funded from their personal savings and started off as a part-time endeavour. The facility is now home to over 145 dogs - many of which have medical problems and disabilities. Mariana aims to provide medical and dental care, food, hygiene, love and nurturing - but there are only so many resources available. Anyone who has been to a big city in Brazil will appreciate the scale of the challenge and Mariana is now struggling to keep up with demand. Many of the dogs being left at the shelter have been injured in road traffic accidents and face a death sentence if left on the streets. At the moment, the shelter (which is also Mariana's home), is being funded from her and her husband's income and modest donations from the public.
