In Part 1 of this lecture, Professor Gus John asks "Where did the name "Windrush" come from? How did it come to be so dominant in a discourse on the presence and settlement of black people, and particularly black Caribbean people in this society? ". This lecture is released during a series of events to launch two New Beacon Books titles written by Professor Gus John. Book 1: Don't Salvage the Empire Windrush - Gus John debunks the notion that the arrival of the Empire Windrush on 22 June 1948 marked the beginning of the evolution and growth of multiracial Britain and the claim that the 'Windrush Generation' rebuilt post-war Britain and made it prosperous again. Preface by Professor Lez Henry Book 2: Blazing Trails - Through 22 stories, obituaries and eulogies, Professor Gus John weaves together the lives from a generation who dedicated themselves to the struggle for racial equality and social justice in Britain. Preface by Margaret Busby Professor Augustine "Gus" John was born in Grenada, Eastern Caribbean and has lived mainly in the UK since 1964. He was a member of the Campaign Against Racial Discrimination (CARD) in the middle to late 1960s and a member of the council of the institute of Race Relations in the early 1970s.
