To help out, I’ve created a quick list of 5 items that you can use to guide your verses. There are plenty of other options out there, but this should definitely get you started in the right directions. Life Events This is probably the most common source of inspiration to draw from. Just like you’d tell a friend a story about something that happened, draw on your life and recreate an event. Braggadocio This is another extremely common source of inspiration. If you’re not familiar with braggadocio, it’s basically a style focused on self-hype. You get to talk about how awesome you are, how much better you are than everyone else, and all the fancy stuff most people use to box rap into a stereotype. This is one of the more fun styles to play with. Try Simon Says by Pharoahe Monch. Or a million other songs. Fictional Stories Fictional stories are another good way to start writing. Just make up a story and take it wherever you want. It can be realistic or ridiculous as you want. Being fictional frees you up to speak about whatever you want. If you want an example try Cliffhanger by Blackalicious. World Events Grab a newspaper, figure out what’s going on in the world and write what you think or how you feel about it. It’s that simple. One note, if you’re planning on writing this type of song, you’ll get the most impact by creating and releasing it quickly. You wouldn’t want to finish the song and have it no longer be relevant. Love Songs While technically this is just a type of life event, there’s enough songs in this category to warrant its own mention. You don’t have to be in love to write a love song, write about the person you’ve had your eye on. Write about someone you used to be in love with. If you’ve never been in love, write about that. The number one thing is to just pick a topic and start writing. Once you get a few words down, it’s so much easier to push forward.
