Eugène Delacroix - Top ten of his best paintings Ferdinand Victor Eugène Delacroix (26 April 1798 – 13 August 1863) was a prominent French Romantic artist, recognized as the leader of the French Romantic school from the beginning of his career. Unlike his contemporary rival Ingres, who favored Neoclassical perfectionism, Delacroix was inspired by the art of Rubens and the Venetian Renaissance, emphasizing color and movement over clear outlines and modeled forms. His mature work was marked by dramatic and romantic themes, leading him to seek out the exotic through travel in North Africa. He was influenced by Théodore Géricault and Lord Byron, sharing a deep connection with the sublime forces of nature. Despite his passion for passion, Delacroix avoided sentimentality and bombast, displaying an individualist style of Romanticism. As Baudelaire put it, "Delacroix was passionately in love with passion, but coldly determined to express passion as clearly as possible." Along with Ingres, Delacroix is considered one of the last old Masters of painting, and one of the few who was ever photographed. As a painter and muralist, Delacroix's expressive brushstrokes and study of color's optical effects greatly influenced the Impressionists, while his fascination with the exotic served as inspiration for the Symbolist movement. Additionally, Delacroix was a skilled lithographer, producing illustrations for works by William Shakespeare, Walter Scott, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. #famouspaintings #topten #top10 #eugènedelacroix
