The Mara smartphone factory was inaugurated in 2019 in the presence of President Cyril Ramaphosa. The now defunct facility was built with half of a R1.5 billion loan from Standard Bank and the Industrial Development Corporation, the remaining funds were used to secure the company's operations. Mara Phones has since gone under after only nine months in business. The company officials have stated that its devices haven't sold as planned, due to the COVID-19 impact on its business. Today, the local management of Mara Phones has made a direct bid to the IDC to buy back the factory at Dube Trade Port from lenders who took ownership of it. Editor-At-Large at MyBroadband, Jan Vermuelen, weighs in. Tune into Newzroom Afrika, DSTV channel 405 for more details.
