Gov. Gretchen Whitmer held a ceremonial signing of the education budget at Potter Elementary School in Flint, highlighting the continuation of free meals for all K-12 students. "That's money back in pockets for hard-working people who need it for utilities, rent, groceries," she said. The state has allocated $248.1 million for free breakfast and lunch, benefiting all public school students. Whitmer emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, "It's hard to focus on anything when you're hungry." The $24.1 billion budget, one of the largest for schools in Michigan's history, also includes funds for higher education. Despite being passed later than usual, Sen. Darrin Camilleri noted, "We fought for our priorities, and we ultimately produced a result that benefits every student in every corner of the state." The budget aims to expand preschool programs for all four-year-olds and address classroom sizes. Additionally, it offers every high school graduate the opportunity to earn a free community college degree, potentially saving more than $27,000 per student.
