Beyond Island Lake-Backpacking The Wind River Range-Popo Agie Wilderness

July 25-26, 2025-We did a one night, two day backpacking trip into the Wind River Range of the Popo Agie Wilderness. This was our first time to backpack into grizzly bear territory. Everyone was carrying bear spray and most people were open carry. We hiked to Island Lake and set up camp. We then hiked up to three beautiful Tarns high above. We were the only people there. This area was magical and absolutely beautiful. There were two boulder fields we had to cross to get to the highest lake but it wasn't too hard. We saw three lakes and three tarns on our adventure. No Grizzly Bears, thank God! 13.5 miles and 2170 feet of elevation gain. * Ken, I hope you and Gunny had a great time and caught lots of fish. It was great to meet you.
