As parents and caregivers, you may notice that your teenager goes through ups and downs. But if you notice your child’s episodes growing more intense and prolonged, you may begin to ask yourself if they are going through the typical emotions associated with being a teenager, or if it is something more serious, such as depression. It is important to remember that depression is more than just being sad or moody. A few indicators to look out for are: • Feelings of sadness, irritability and anger that is out of character • Feelings of hopelessness or emptiness • Changes in appetite: eating too little or overeating • Changes in sleeping patterns: having trouble sleeping or oversleeping • Isolation from friends and family • Self harm • Having unexpected changes in academic performance • Trouble remembering things or concentrating • Less attention to personal hygiene Caregivers should also monitor how long these changes in behavior are lasting and how often they are occurring. Should you have any concerns or questions regarding your child’s mental health, please contact their pediatrician. Remember we’re always here to help.
