3/3 What is a Glass Sponge?

That's not a rock! Like corals, glass sponges are animals that are important parts of the ocean. They provide places to hide for fish and shrimp, filter bacteria out of the water, and fertilize the ocean with ammonium. These delicate ecosystems face dangers from bottom contact fishing such as bottom trawling and prawn trapping. Back then, we called for a marine protected area for giant glass sponge reefs in northern BC. We are proud to say it was then designated in 2017 as the Hecate Strait/Queen Charlotte Sound Glass Sponge Reefs Marine Protected Area. We are currently working to protect more glass sponge reefs from being crushed by fishing gear and choking on sediment. We're working hard to get more protections for our lands and waters.
