The Reverend John Michael Fischer, 87, died Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Saint Vincent Hospital in Erie, Pennsylvania. Father Fischer was born on July 28, 1937 in Erie, Pennsylvania, the son of Henry Wilfred and Ruth Margaret (Welch) Fischer. After attending Saint John the Baptist School and Cathedral Preparatory School, both in Erie, he attended Gannon College (now Gannon University) while in St. Mark Seminary. Fr. Fischer later received his master's in education from Gannon College and his master's in Christian spirituality from Creighton University, Omaha. He was ordained a priest on May 23, 1963 in St. Peter Cathedral, Erie, by The Most Reverend Edward P. McManamon. He began his priestly ministry as a Parochial Vicar for the parishes of Saint John the Baptist, Erie; Saint Brigid, Meadville; Holy Rosary, Johnsonburg; and Saint Joseph, Sharon. Father Fischer was appointed Pastor of Saint Raphael, Eldred, in 1975, a position he held until 1990 when he was named Pastor of Saint Matthew-in-the-Woods, Erie, and Saint Cyprian, Waterford. In 1996, He was appointed Pastor of Saint Lawrence, Albion, a position he held until his retirement in 2007. In retirement, he served briefly as the Parochial Administrator of Saint Hippolyte, Guys Mills. He enjoyed working in prison ministry, being involved in Cursillo, and connecting with brother priests through his Jesus Caritas Fraternity (a small priest group). In his free time, Father Fischer enjoyed collecting postal cards and fishing in Alaska, Elk Creek, and Presque Isle. Father Fischer was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, James P. Fischer, and another brother, Joseph P. Fischer. He is survived by his sister, Carol F. Kuna, his nieces Anne (Gary) Shiel and Ellen Fischer (Christopher Louis), nephews Robert Kuna (Jeanine Green), Joseph (Patti) Kuna, Ben (Nicki) Fischer, and great-niece Jennifer (Brent) Amendola. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Murphy Priest Retirement Home 429 East Grandview Blvd., Erie, PA 16504 or to a local parish. Visitation will take place on Sunday, March 9 at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 W. 38th St., Erie, PA 16508, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM and on Monday, March 10 at Saint John the Baptist Church, 509 East 26th St., Erie, PA 16504, from 10:00 AM until the funeral at 11:00 AM, with The Most Reverend Lawrence T. Persico, Bishop of Erie, as the main celebrant.
