PACIFIC PALISADES — On Wednesday, April 2, 2025, cleanup operations continued along the shoreline of Will Rogers State Beach as Los Angeles County crews worked to remove wildfire debris deposited by recent tides. Using heavy machinery, including front-end loaders, teams methodically gathered charred wood and other remnants washed ashore in the wake of the devastating Palisades Fire. Crews were observed collecting large piles of burnt driftwood and segregating them into organized debris mounds near the Pacific Coast Highway and Temescal Canyon Road. The operation is part of an ongoing regional response to mitigate environmental and public safety hazards left in the fire’s aftermath. The Palisades Fire, which ignited on January 7, 2025, burned approximately 23,448 acres across Pacific Palisades and Malibu. Driven by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds peaking at 100 mph and fueled by severe drought conditions, the blaze destroyed 6,837 structures, including homes, businesses, and places of worship. More than 100,000 residents were evacuated during the fire, which claimed 12 lives and left dozens injured. Containment was achieved by January 31, 2025. Since the fire’s containment, rainfall and ocean currents have transported scorched material from inland burn scars down creeks and rivers, ultimately depositing it along the Los Angeles coastline. The Department of Beaches and Harbors continues to monitor sediment and water quality, while public access to certain beach areas remains restricted during recovery operations. Officials are urging beachgoers to stay clear of cleanup zones and remain cautious when visiting affected beaches, as debris may contain sharp edges or unstable materials.
