How can we assign a market value to the equity or debt of a private company that only reports its assets and liabilities over a certain period of time, say a high-tech startup? Quite surprisingly, we can in this case treat this company's equity as a call option and apply our usual Black-Scholes with a slight tweak to figure out its fair value (and much more in the process).
