It is no wonder that Spanish poet and dramatist Federico García Lorca had yearnings to be a visual artist considering the vivid imagery that saturates his writing. While he began by doodling caricatures of his professors and friends at school in Granada, García Lorca drew throughout his life, exploring new ideas and illustrating his own dramatic works and prose. Most of his drawings span several distinct periods in his life including: the times surrounding his compelling, complicated and veiled liaison with Salvador Dalí; while García Lorca was studying and writing in New York; and later while living in Buenos Aires. While in Argentina, he focused more intently on his illustration and original drawings, rather than writing. He worked on collaborations for Pablo Neruda. In 1926, García Lorca even exhibited his art work at the Dalman Galleries in Barcelona with the help of Dalí and critic Sebastía Gasch. His drawings were published in various newspapers and in his own magazine "Gallo" throughout his career. This selection of drawings and paintings made by García Lorca, while not necessarily serious efforts, do indeed demonstrate his more intimate and spontaneous thoughts, as well as recurring symbols and motifs in both language and line. Perhaps such scribbles allow us even greater insight into his writings. Federico del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús García Lorca (1898-1936) achieved international recognition as an emblematic member of the Feneration of '27. As a child, he trained as a classical pianist; his first prose, in fact, drew on musical form and was inspired by the death of composer Manuel de Falla. By age 19, he had published his first book, Impresiones y Paisajes. A year later, his first play "El Maleficio de la Mariposa" was staged although he usually claimed that "Mariana Pineda", written a full eight years later, was indeed his first attempt as a playwright. By that time, however, his credentials were bolstered by having received degrees in both law and philosophy. He went on to publish over fifteen collections of his prose as well as finish over as many plays, although many were never staged until after his death. He also wrote a screenplay, for 1929's "Viaje a la luna", and one opera, "Lola, la Comedianta" (1923). He urged a rediscovery of the roots of European theater and the questioning of comfortable conventions, such as the popular drawing room comedies of the time. His work challenged the accepted role of women in society and often explored taboo issues such as homoeroticism and class inequality. García Lorca wrote little poetry in this last period of his life, declaring in 1936: "theater is poetry that rises from the book and becomes human enough to talk and shout, weep and despair." In 1936, less than one month into the Spanish Civil War, and while visiting his family's home in Grenada, García Lorca was arrested and executed by Nationalist militia. While his murder was indeed a political action, there is still great controversy and speculation regarding his death. It has been documented that his killers commented on his sexual orientation. Further theories suggest that it was one of a series of mass killings to frighten and stifle supporters of the Marxist Popular Front. The young poet was only thirty-eight.
