What is Joint Position Error Testing (JPET)? Jeanette Tousignant, Vestibular Physical Therapy expert at Active Marquette explains. "Joint position error testing is another assessment tool we use for our vestibular patients, and in particular those who have had whiplash. When we have a whiplash-type injury for instance, those muscles around the cervical spine that attach your head to your neck and your shoulder blades to your neck go on high alert to stop motion of the head. They become strained. You can sprain ligaments and tendons that are surrounding the neck. And when that happens, those structures don't really perform like they're supposed to in regards to that muscle and joint input. so if you sprain your neck, you will have a challenge with accurately perceiving the information that those muscles and joint surfaces are saying about where your head is in space. That can also lead to dizziness, headache, the sensation of movement that isn't true, and in general really slow you down. It's something that has to be asked and looked at in order to make sure that when you get back to full activity, whether you're driving a car or playing sports. If that is a part of your story, it will slow down your vestibular system as a whole, make you less efficient, and more symptomatic.
