https://DrBalikian.com Today's lecture in our Neck Lift 101 series is all about understanding more deeply what a neck lift involves and decoding some of the specialized terminology. In this segment, we're going to focus on a lesser-known but incredibly important concept called hyoid release. This is a key part of achieving an elegant, sculpted neckline in certain patients. So what exactly is the hyoid bone? The hyoid is a small, U-shaped bone located high in the neck, right around the level where the tongue and throat meet. It’s unique because, unlike most other bones in the body, it doesn’t directly connect to any other bone. Instead, it’s suspended in place by muscles and fascia, essentially acting as an anchor point during early development. In terms of facial aesthetics and neck structure, the position of the hyoid bone matters more than most people realize. In some individuals, the hyoid bone naturally sits lower in the neck. When this happens, it pulls the whole neck structure downward, making the neck look shorter and the jawline appear less defined. From a profile view, this creates a more oblique or sloped angle from the chin to the base of the neck. On the other hand, a higher hyoid bone placement results in a longer-appearing neck with a crisp, youthful contour and a more defined cervical angle, the ideal look we aim for in advanced neck rejuvenation procedures. So how do we address a low hyoid bone during a neck lift? That’s where a hyoid release, also known as a hyoid fasciotomy, comes into play. This technique involves gently cutting the fascia, or connective tissue, at the base of the hyoid bone that is anchoring it downward. By releasing just enough of these attachments, we free the hyoid to shift slightly upward when the rest of the neck structures are lifted. It's a delicate process, but one that allows for a more dramatic and long-lasting improvement in the neck’s contour. It’s important to clarify that this is not a full detachment, we're not severing the hyoid bone from its functional role. Instead, we’re making a calculated, conservative release to give it enough freedom to rise as the deeper tissues are repositioned. This subtle shift helps elongate the neck visually and supports the sharper angles we associate with youth and beauty. When you look at our before and after photos, you may notice some patients have an especially striking improvement, not just a lifted appearance, but a truly refined and elegant neckline. That’s often because we’ve done a careful hyoid release in addition to the traditional neck lift steps. The result is a more comprehensive transformation, not just skin-deep, but structural. So while the hyoid release might sound technical or complex, it’s simply another tool we use to create beautiful, natural-looking outcomes that enhance each patient’s unique anatomy. By understanding the importance of this small, floating bone, and how we can adjust its position safely, you can see how surgical artistry really makes a difference in your neck lift results. #NeckLift #NecklineLift #Platysmaplasty #NeckLiftResults #FacialRejuvenation #SharpJawline #PlasticSurgeryEducation #NeckLiftBeforeAfter ----- BALIKIAN FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY https://DrBalikian.com MURRIETA https://www.drbalikian.com/contact-fa... 951-719-2950 25220 Hancock Ave STE 115, Murrieta, CA 92562 SAN DIEGO https://www.drbalikiansandiego.com/co... 858-230-8938 1431 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014 ----- LEARN MORE ABOUT THE NECK LIFT PROCEDURE https://www.drbalikian.com/facial-pla...
