This is Sadrak, who is part of our Orang Laut team who worked on our Yaf Keru Yenbuba reef restoration project. In this short interview he talks about why coral reefs and reef restoration are important in Raja Ampat, and his hopes for the future! *Video is in Bahasa Indonesia, English Translation (redacted) below* My name is Sadrak Sauyai, I come from the village of Yenbuba, and I am a freelancing tour guide, in particular underwater dive guiding. QU: WHY ARE CORAL REEFS IN RAJA AMPAT IMPORTANT TO YOU, AND OTHER LOCAL COMMUNITY IN RAJA AMPAT and DO YOU THINK REEF RESTORATION IS IMPORTANT OR NOT? Because, in my opinion, it is important for us. From childhood, my parents have been gathering resources from the sea, like fish, emphasizing on the importance of the sea for them. So now I’m adult and I think like this too. Furthermore, now that I am a dive guide, Corals have become even more important for me and also my responsibility to protect it so coral reefs and the abundance of fish keep attracting guests and divers. Usually here guests are happy and excited to dive around here because of the beauty of the nature of Raja Ampat. QU: WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE FUTURE? My hope for the future is that we can protect and take care of the reef and the sea.. and also maybe we can get to plant more corals like we did, that they will grow big and healthy so that us human can get more benefits too. If coral grows, small fish come in and attract big fish that gather right here on the artificial reef ….. and then snorkelers and divers can come and enjoy in front of the village, take pictures and videos. Benefits like tourism and also just fish (for eating) can hopely benefit us but also our future grandchildren!
