California’s Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) system—led by LEAD-K Family Services in partnership with the California Department of Education (CDE) Deaf Education Unit—ensures that families of deaf and hard of hearing infants are connected to critical language acquisition and development supports from the very beginning. This session highlights how newborn hearing screenings, timely Part C referrals, and early language access services align with California’s SB 210 law, which promotes tracking of language milestones for deaf children from birth to age five to support kindergarten readiness in literacy. Key components include Deaf coaches embedded within IFSP and IEP service systems to help families navigate early language development and access. Deaf and hard of hearing children’s early language development is a central focus of both Part C Early Intervention and Part B Early Childhood Education. Join us to learn how California is leading the way in supporting kindergarten readiness and language equity for deaf and hard of hearing children—starting at birth.
