In 2156, humanity made contact with something called "The Synthesis"—an intelligence embedded in cosmic radiation that offered humanity everything they'd ever dreamed of: the end of disease, the end of aging, the end of death itself. And humanity accepted. But The Synthesis didn't enhance humanity. It consumed it. It turned billions of unique individuals into identical, optimized copies running the same program.
