CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) Responsibility of companies towards society. Companies use natural resources in some form or the other to make a product and earn significant profits, but what does nature give in return…? Water pollution, air pollution and noise pollution which people in the society have to bear because of these companies they have to use polluted air and water. But these affected people are not given any direct compensation on behalf of the companies. Therefore, it has been made mandatory for companies all over the world, including India, that they have to spend some of their income for the well being of the people due to which they have been inconvenienced. Therefore, CSR was started to make companies realize their responsibility towards society. CSR rules were implemented in India from 1 April 2014. According to its rule, a scope was fixed which included those companies whose annual net worth is Rs 500 crore or annual income of 1000 crore or annual profit of 5 crore. If a company falls into any of the categories mentioned, they will have to spend at least 2% of their 3-year average profit on CSR. The CSR rules apply not only to Indian companies but also to foreign companies whose branch, office or factory is in India. In which area or in which activities can companies participate under CSR? It consists of the following activities: - 1. End hunger, poverty and malnutrition 2. Improve maternal and child health 3. Promoting education 4. Promoting sports activities 5. Ensuring environmental sustainability 6. Measures for the benefit of the armed forces 7. Protection of National Heritage 8. Prime Minister's contribution to national relief 9. Development of slum area 10. Construction of toilets in schools According to the figures of the Ministry, in 2015-16, Rs 9822 crore was spent on CSR activities, which is 11.5% higher than the previous year. In the year 2015-16 report, 5097 companies are included in CSR. The top 10 spent Rs 3207 crore which is 33% of the total expenditure: - How much is spent on which area? 1. Health and Medical - Rs 3117 crore 2. Education - Rs 3073 crore 3. Rural Development - Rs 1051 crore 4. Environment - Rs 923 crore 5. Clean India Fund - Rs 355 crore According to a recent survey, in the year 2016, 99% of companies in India have followed the CSR rules, apart from only Japan and England companies have touched the figure of 99%. Both the companies and the government benefit from the social work done by companies under CSR. While spending in CSR gives some relief to the government from the expenditure on welfare of the people on the one hand, on the other hand, in the eyes of the people, a good image of the companies is created, which makes it easier for the company to sell its products. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs issued a notification on 24 August for changes in the CSR rules. The government has changed the CSR rules under the Companies Act due to Kovid-19. This has been done to provide more funds for the development of new vaccines, drug development and to increase production of medical devices. Companies now engaged in the research and development of Kovid-19 vaccines, medicine and medical equipment can now show some of the expenses incurred in their research and development in CSR expenses after new amendments. These changes made in CSR are valid for the financial years 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23. Thanks for watching Simple Hindi Fact
