Businessman Christo Wiese has denied that he's involved in any tax evasion scheme. The Mail and Guardian's investigative unit, amaBhungane, has reported on papers filed in the Western Cape High Court that show that SARS wants Wiese and a few other individuals to be held accountable for R217-million. Amabhugane says the R217-million is a part of the R3.7-billion bigger tax claim based on multinational oil and gas exploration company Tullow Oil's "restructuring". Wiese's company Titan ultimately bought the remaining South African company left after the restructuring, which actually held no assets. According to the article, law firm ENSAfrica created an "aggressivetax structure" which Tullow used to shift assets worth R3.9-billion out of South Africa. Wiese was a former executive of ENSAfrica.
