WEST COAST NOISE TOUR Recently, while digging through my archives, I unearthed hundreds of hours of video including my Hi8 footage from Sonic Youth’s Sonic Nurse tour—a time capsule from the summer of 2004. What I found is now shaped into a short documentary entitled West Coast Noise Tour. For context: It was the summer that Lollapalooza, once a roaming cultural monolith, had collapsed under the weight of dwindling interest leading to the cancellation of its 2004 edition. Within that void, one of the scheduled headliners, Sonic Youth, chose to carry on - forging a sonorous path across America. For the West Coast leg of the tour, Sonic Youth was joined by Wolf Eyes, freshly signed to Sub Pop, and my band, XBXRX. We had just partnered with Polyvinyl to record Sixth in Sixes, an album recorded immediately after that was fueled by the tours energy and intensity. Every night of the tour, in sold-out rooms, each of our bands would confuse the eager crowds. Expectations twisted into confusion. We could hear arguments breaking out in real time: "Is this the worst band I’ve ever seen!?” they'd ask, baffled and hostile. Then Wolf Eyes would follow, and the confusion would deepen. “Wait—no, they’re the worst!” The lines blurred. The debates echoed. And we were enjoying every second of it. To this day, I am deeply grateful to Sonic Youth and their crew—not only for inviting us into their world, but also for allowing the chaos to unfold exactly as it was meant to be. XBXRX and Wolf Eyes may not have been what Sonic Youth audiences were expecting to experience for two hours a night, but it was an honor to be part of a dream tour that had, and continues to, invoke an indelible impact on our lives.
