(4 Sep 1996) T/I 11:10:15 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Erez Crossing in Gaza on Wednesday (4/9) formally met Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for the first time and said he was committed to carrying out peace agreements Arafat had signed with Israel's previous government. At a joint press conference, Arafat also said his side was "committed to cooperate with Mr. Netanyahu and his government regardless of our political opinions." I have heard in the Palestinian press quarters that we are going to fragment the porcess. This is not true. We want to advance the issues of concern to all of us. I also want to make clear, that our position is not only to move on the peace process but also improve the prosperity and the economic conditions of the Palestinian people. Peace and prosperity move hand in hand and we can advance to achieve both goals.
