Street Racer Longplay (Sega Genesis) [QHD]

Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: Vivid Image Publisher: Vivid Image Year of Release: 1995 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- From the folks who made First Samurai on Amiga comes Street Racer. This pretender to the crown of kart racers might look a lot like Super Mario Kart, but there's got to be more to the racing experience than some flashy graphics if it wants to usurp Nintendo's pole position on the 16-bit racing podium. On a technical level, Street Racer certainly impresses. The developers did a great job creating the effect of driving on a solid plain without the assistance of Mode 7 shenanigans, and the artwork and graphics are to a high standard. On a gameplay level, things don't seem so rosyy. Players can choose from a diverse assortment of racers to participate in various championships, each set across a set number of individual races. The drivers can perform left and right attacks that lash out, Road Rash-style, at opponents to the sides of the vehicle, and also have a couple of area-of-effect special moves to boot. Furthermore, the vehicles purport to have different strengths and weaknesses, which include speed and cornering, but these are rendered pointless in the single-player game because the CPU employs some of the most egregious rubber-banding "catch-up" I've ever seen. Characters with with slowest vehicles will overtake those with the fastest with ease, and zip off into the distance, holding their position until the game deigns that you are allowed to overtake them. I understand the difficulty inherent in trying to balance a game to make it fun, but this falls way short of the mark. I also have to confess that I found the overall racing experience, CPU catch-up aside, to be really bland. The number of on-track power ups is limited to a a turbo boost and a time bomb that can be slapped to the back of an opponent's cart, but the controls are so finnicky that it's close to impossible to make much use of it. Aside from racing, the game does include a couple of bonus modes to experiment with. You can play a soccer match in what feels like a really embryonic version of Rocket League, bunting the ball at the goal using your vehicle, and a simplistic deathmatch set inside a circular arena where the objective is to knock your opponents out of the ring by slamming them into the sides until the barriers break. Neither of these are particularly fun, unfortunately, at least not in single player. I had some feint memory of renting this cart from Blockbuster video a couple of times and thinking it was cool, but in the cold light of 2023, I can't say I had much fun with this at all. It might be better in multiplayer, but the solo experience is just bland and repetitive.
