He is considered one of the greatest players of all time and has scored over 550 goals for club and country. Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born 5th February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira to his father Jose, a gardener and his mother Maria, a cook. His second given name “Ronaldo” was chosen after his father's favourite actor and US President Ronald Reagan. His family was relatively poor and he shared a bedroom with his older brother and two older sisters. He played football for local boys teams until the age of 12 when he was signed by Sporting Lisbon. He moved away from his family to live with the other young players at the academy. By the age of 14 he took the decision to quit his education to focus on his football career. Ronaldo can play in numerous attacking positions, as well as on either wing or in the centre. In his early years he was often used solely as a winger, using his pace to beat defenders in one-on-one situations. He is a natural right footed player but is very comfortable using his left. As his career has progressed he has been given much more positional freedom. His increased strength made him harder to muscle off the ball. His 6ft1 frame gives him an aerial advantage which leads to many of his goals coming from headers. Ronaldo has one son, also named Cristiano, born in 2010 in the United States to an unknown mother. Ronaldo has full custody. Ronaldo is a devout Roman Catholic. He has dated models Alice Goodwin, Gemma Atkinson and Irina Shayk but he has recently started a relationship with Spaniard Georgina Rodriguez.
