If you had to hike it yourself, you might just tell friends “It was like walking staight uphill”. That’s the kind of terrain two firefighting crews had to navigate in order to complete an important primary fire control line just outside of Stoner. The dozer line runs three miles from Stoner Creek up onto Taylor Mesa. For the last two days, sawyers with the Los Padres Hotshots have been dropping hazard trees along the line. Right behind the hotshots, the Rocha Reforestation Type 2 crew used saws, muscle, team work, and steady footwork to cut up logs, trim brush and remove the debris from the line. A half-mile of that work was done on a 40% grade, which is steep enough to qualify as a black diamond run in downhill skiing terms. Crew leaders and division supervisors provided periodic breaks and ensured firefighters had plenty of water and snacks in order to minimize fatigue and avoid injuries. This now-finished control line has been implemented in order to protect Stoner and the the highway 145 corridor from possible future firespread.
