Here in Australia, this track is probably one of the best known tracks by the Quintet of the Hot Club of France, although most people could not tell you its name. It was used prominently in a charming TV commercial around twenty years ago advertising, of all things, lamb, featuring a dog looking longingly into a butcher's shop window. This track was recorded by the Quintet on 25 August 1939 in London, as by that stage the war was ominously approaching France. The group featured Django Reinhardt on guitar and Stephane Grappelli on violin, together with Eugene Vees and Pierre Ferret on rhythm guitars and Emmanuel Soudieux on bass. Next month, Django went back to France and, with the German invasion of that country, became revered by his fellow countrymen. However, that was the end of this version of the Quintet, and Django went on to play with many other musicians, including Stephane, until his death in 1953 at the age of 43. There is no film of the Quintet playing this tune, so I have made my own slide show video, attempting to simulate what it must have been like to see them play this song live. Comments are welcome. (Update 17 Sept 2017 - finally found ad on youtube, it was for trim lamb. You can find it by searching TRIM LAMB, CLASSIC TV COMMERCIAL on youtube.)
