Greenville County Animal Control officers recovered more than 140 dogs and puppies from a puppy mill Thursday. The bust happened on Dunklin Bridge Road in Fountain Inn. Investigators say Dale Ferguson was keeping the dogs in unsafe and dirty conditions. He's been charged with nine citations, including five for cruelty to animals and another for failure to dispose of a dead animal.All of the dogs were taken to Greenville County Animal Care, but only about half will be able to be adopted.Veterinarians there have been inspecting the dogs all day and say many have health problems due to the condition they were kept in. Fortunately, we haven't had any that look like they need to be euthanized, says Dr. Teri Worl. They're all in fairly good body condition but the majority of the little ones have rotting teeth, are flea infested or heartworm positive, and have bad diarrhea, which means intestinal parasites. Some are very friendly, some very standoffish. So far it's half and half--half can be adopted out, the other half will have to go to rescue. We got a lot of pregnant ones too, Worl added. Three of the dogs were in labor today at the shelter. Susan Bufano of Greenville County Animal Care says most puppy mills are horrible for the animals.
