Struma Ovarii Struma Ovarii is a rare ovarian teratoma composed predominantly of thyroid tissue. It accounts for Less than 5% of ovarian teratomas and can exhibit functional thyroid activity, sometimes causing hyperthyroidism. Pathophysiology A monodermal teratoma containing mature thyroid follicles. Can produce thyroid hormones, leading to thyrotoxicosis in some cases. Occasionally associated with ovarian carcinoma (~5% cases). Clinical Features Abdominal mass or pelvic pain. Hyperthyroid symptoms (tachycardia, weight loss, heat intolerance) if hormonally active. Ascites or Meigs syndrome (rare). Diagnosis Ultrasound or MRI (solid-cystic ovarian mass). Thyroid function tests (T3/T4 elevation in hyperthyroid cases). Histopathology confirms thyroid tissue within the ovarian tumor. Treatment Surgical removal (oophorectomy or cystectomy). Thyroid function monitoring post-surgery. Follow-up for malignancy risk in atypical cases. #StrumaOvarii
