‘In the eye of the beholder’ is a short-film based around the mechanism of self-perception. Written & Directed by Anna Yurovnikova Starring Laura Sihvonen and Lara Godinho Pereira Artes Plásticas e Multimédia - Universidade de Évora "I believe that everyone had a time in their life when they struggled with negative aspects of it. Appearance wise, character wise or skill wise, we all did not like something about ourselves that no one else even noticed. Every teenager stared at the mirror and thought something along the lines of: ‘my hair is such a mess’, ‘my nose is too big’, ‘I don’t like my face’ or ‘I don’t like my body’. Just like every artist criticized their own work. It’s incredibly common in creative fields to be hard on yourself. Every artist has a work and a few that they hated. We create perfect images in our heads, watch everyone else’s work in awe and then compare with ours unfairly. It’s not intentional. With clouded eyes we’ll look at our own creations and only see imperfections. But someone else won’t. They’ll see something else, and they might even adore what they’ve seen. And then, due to their influence or time passing, we’ll start to see it differently too. Parts we did not like won’t disappear, but they’ll lose the overwhelming weight next to the parts we like, parts we appreciate. And in time we learn to accept it. I think it beautifully parallels the relationship a lot of people have with their own self." #shortfilm #selfperception #experimental
