A catheter is a tube which is inserted directly into the urinary bladder to drain out the urine directly from the bladder into an external bag. It should be done commonly before a surgery or in case of a bedridden patient so that the mobilisation chances can be reduced by draining out the urine with the help of a tube. There are two kinds of catheter. One is Foley's catheter, another is silicon catheter. The frequency of changing varies according to the type of catheter. Normally the Foley's catheter has to be changed in a shorter duration than the silicone one. If catheter is in place the catheter care has to be given on a daily basis and whenever is required. To prevent the infection chances we also can do a bladder irrigation or a bladder wash. All this will contribute to patient wellbeing.
