(15 Nov 1995) Korean/Mandarin Chinese President Jiang Zemin is calling for an easing of tensions between North and South Korea. He says the diplomatic strains between the two neighbours should be worked out for the sake of world peace and stability. Jiang's comments came during the third day of his visit to South Korea. Earlier, he met businessmen and toured a micro chip factory... clear symbols of the increasing economic ties between China and South Korea. Chinese President Jiang Zemin received a rapturous welcome as he arrived to speak at South Korea's National Assembly in Seoul. Jiang's visit is the first ever to South Korea by a Chinese head of state. It reflects the strengthening relations between the two countries which established formal diplomatic ties only three years ago. Jiang called on Pyongyang to drop its hostile attitude towards Seoul by resuming Inter- Korean talks. SOUNDBITE: "The tension on the Korean peninsula must be resolved and the problems on the peninsula must be solved in order for the two Koreas to become closer, and this is important for Asia and world peace and stability." SUPER CAPTION: Chinese President Jiang Zemin The Chinese President met with South Korean business leaders during lunch. Jiang later spoke with South Korean Prime Minister Lee Hong Koo. In the evening, the Jiang and the president of South Korea attended an official dinner. And Jiang again underlined his commitment to Beijing's enhanced relationship with Seoul: SOUNDBITE: "Let's make a toast to closer relations between China and Korea and to wealth." SUPER CAPTION: Chinese President Jiang Zemin Jiang also visited the Samsung factory... and promptly signed his name in the visitors' book. China is North Korea's third- largest trading partner. The two countries have already set up joint programmes in the engineering sector. Jiang is due to spend some time relaxing at a South Korean holiday resort before flying to Osaka for the APEC summit.
