In the winter of 1944 to 1945, the Netherlands faced the Hunger Winter, one of the darkest civilian famines of World War II. Food was cut off, families boiled tulip bulbs to survive, and thousands died before help arrived. Then, in late April 1945, the skies changed everything. Allied aircraft dropped food over starving Dutch cities, canned meat, flour, powdered milk, and even chocolate. Days later, Canadian troops moved in on the ground. What followed was not just liberation. It was a bond built on discipline, restraint, and humanity that the Dutch never forgot. This is the true story behind a friendship so enduring it still blooms every spring in a foreign capital, thousands of tulips sent in gratitude, year after year. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE for more untold Canadian military history: / @canadianfrontarchives 📜 MUSIC CREDITS Music: “The Maple Leaf Forever” (Alexander Muir, 1867), public domain composition.
