This homeowner was dealing with a backyard that constantly flooded and held water — most of it coming from a neighbor’s property. To solve the problem, we designed a drainage system with catch basins and inlets to capture the water and direct it to a pop-up emitter. The town engineer required an additional solution to limit water discharge near the sidewalk, so we installed a 70-foot leach field (soak trench) to let excess water safely infiltrate into the ground. Along with that, we regraded the backyard to improve water flow. 💧 What is a Leach Field? A yard drain leach field is built exactly the same way as a French drain, but with one key difference: A French drain is designed to collect and carry water away. A leach field (also called a leach trench or soakaway) is designed to slowly percolate water into the subsoil, reducing stormwater runoff and helping to recharge underground aquifers. After a good rain, we show the system in action — and later came back to make a few adjustments so it worked even better.
