The name Marikana reverberated in the minds of many, thirteen years ago. That was when thousands of workers downed tools at the Lonmin Platinum Mine, demanding a 12,500 rand per month salary for low paid employees. This mining area would become characterised by tension, killings, fear and a cry for better working and living conditions. When the dust settled, 44 lives had been lost, 34 of which, were claimed on 16 August when police opened fire on the striking workers. Our reporter Itumeleng Kgajane and video journalist Sello Mogopa walked down the dusty streets of Nkaneng informal settlement, where thousands of mineworkers are staying. They spoke to ordinary people about the living conditions and whether there have been any developments since 2012. Though residents paint a gloomy picture of the area, they say they are now living in a peaceful environment, where union or political affiliation are no longer causing tensions.
