So after a couple of months, we're bringing back Miku! I know Josh had done this recently. I wasn't intending to do this to outshine or anything. I just though it was a good song to show Miku's return after being offstage for a couple of months. This one, I wanted to exhibit different a option of my four-way independence. Usually I just do the chicks on the hi-hat with the foot as a means of keeping time (technique I [once again] oicked up from listening to Matt Halper), but this called for a backbeat, time on the ride cymbal, and unce unce simultaneously. I attempted to implement the open hi-hat notes with the foot. Not easy, let me tell you. Another thing I'd like to point out is that one of my biggest weaknesses in the context of technique is speed. I was really good at speed when I played more punk music in high school, but when I took an 8 month break a while back, I lost all of it. It doesn't help that I'm not making a living off of it as of right now, so that means I don't have as much time as I want practicing and playing. Something I wish I had started sooner was the double pedal. Had I started sooner, I could do some of the fast bursts a lot cleaner. Both the speed and the pedal issues combined make it really hard to the type of footwork I want to do, especially with what I have planned for later. For those who ask why I'm pointing out my issues, I get it. Most people wouldn't pick up on certain things if I didn't say anything. I truly am my worst critic. However, I feel the need to be transparent as a musician, even if it's just for myself. I need to be aware of my shortcomings on the drums, otherwise I can't get better.
