In this walkthrough, I’ll show you how to use our Excel tool that connects your personal goals to clear business performance targets, so you can stop guessing what “success” looks like and start building a business that funds the life you actually want. I’m Josh Leyenhorst, Principal at BasePoint CPA, and this is a condensed version of an exercise we typically work through with our fractional CFO clients, adapted to be practical for everyday business owners. What this tool helps you do ✅ Identify your personal goals and the annual cash required to fund them ✅ Factor in non-business income to reduce the “cash gap” your business must cover ✅ Translate that cash gap into profit targets (after owner salary) ✅ Reverse-engineer your business to find required revenue, sales, proposals, qualified prospects, and leads ✅ Convert annual targets into monthly and weekly numbers you can track consistently ✅ Run simple “what-if” scenarios (like improving gross margin) to see how the plan changes What’s inside the spreadsheet This tool includes 3 tabs: My Goals: map personal goals across 5 categories (Faith/Fulfillment/Fellowship, Family, Fitness, Fun & Lifestyle, Finance) and estimate annual costs Non-Business Income: add things like dividends, interest, rental income, etc. Summary: the engine that converts your personal cash needs into business targets (profit, revenue, sales pipeline, weekly tracking) Key takeaway Your business should be the vehicle that gets you from where you are today to the life you want to live. Once you know the cash requirements, you can get very specific about what needs to happen inside the business, each month and each week. Notes / Disclaimer This tool includes sample tax rates to demonstrate the math and structure. For accurate tax rates and planning in your specific situation, work with your tax professional (or reach out if you’re a BasePoint client). If you found this useful, subscribe for more practical finance + operations tools for business owners, and let me know in the comments what kind of targets you want help reverse-engineering next.
