There are several different grass types in SE Texas, including Bermuda and St. Augustine, which have very different approaches to get the best results. The biggest mistake I see with St. Augustine is that most people cut the turf too low. So how high should you mow St. Augustine? The correct answer is not a number, but a range which depends on your preference, growing conditions and overall health of the soil and turf. I recommend you stay somewhere within 3.5 - 4.5” for St. Augustine - 4” is a good target in general. This is higher than most recommendations you will find online, but is just my opinion based on my own experiences. If growing conditions are good - moderate temperatures, plenty of rain - you can mow at the lower end of that range. If growing conditions are stressful - high temperatures, no rain - I would keep the St. Augustine at the higher end of that range (4.25-4.5 inches) to minimize stress. Good mowing practices include keeping up with the growth, which means during the growing season, trying to mow once a week if you can. Keep your mower blades sharpened, at least once a mowing season. Irrigation is very important to healthy turf, so a sprinkler system - while obviously not a requirement to grow grass - will help especially in the hotter months. I am of the opinion you do not need a ton of fertilizer and herbicides if your turf is healthy and you have good mowing practices. Fertilize as needed, but no need to overdo it. Btw, a thick (preferably longer) healthy St. Augustine yard will keep most weeds away naturally if you let it fill in and get to the high growth stage in spring/summer.
