Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage - Dual Mode - Extreme No-Death Clear

Shikhondo: Youkai Rampage came out last month and is the latest rerelease of the original Shikhondo: Soul Eater that came out in 2017, which was a Korean shmup with a very cool aesthetic. The first rerelease was in 2020, and was exclusive to Exa Arcadia hardware, under the name Shikhondo: Red Purgatory. Youkai Rampage at first glance seems like it's the Exa version, finally released from their dungeon, but things are not quite that hopeful it seems. If you've been around the indie and retro gaming scene in recent years, chances are you might have heard of the name "Exa Arcadia". It's a word that garners dread, like a he-who-should-not-be-named, for its utterance together with the name of your favorite game will bestow a curse upon it that you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. Every time a new game is announced, it's a terrifying feeling, as it's always somewhere in the shadows, lurking, ready to strike at any time. It might strike when you least expect it, or strike at the height of your joy, only for that joy to instantly turn into despair. Exa is a company that takes indie games and other old games and makes updated ports of them to arcade, often adding new arrange modes, very low input lag and other QOL features to make them better suited to an arcade environment (some better than others). They've garnered quite a bit of infamy duo to their very controversial policy of pure arcade exclusivity, in an era where arcades are all but dead and gone. None of their games will get a port, ever, so long as they have anything to say about it. So your only options here are to find an arcade to play them in, or to buy the system and games for yourself. For the first option I'll just say good luck. Outside of Japan's metropolitan area these might as well not exist. For the second option you better be prepared to shell out close to 6000 EUR for a single game (ex. shipping of at least 200 EUR). The long story short here is that these are basically Unobtainium. Exa is the opposite of accessibility. The true Monkey's Paw. You might be wondering why these games are so expensive, and that's because these are products aimed at businesses, not individuals. These purchases are meant to be an investment, where businesses can set these up to earn an income from the credits that people put into the machines. With the idea being that eventually you'll get a return on your investment if the game is popular enough (and from what I understand Exa is actually fairly cheap compared to what other arcade companies charge). They do also sell to non-business individuals, but for individual consumers it makes zero sense to spend the equivalent of a used car or an Apple Vision Pro on a box that is basically an Intel i3 running on Windows 10 that can only play a single $15 Steam game at that point. Further costs include $80 every time the system or a game needs updating, as it has no internet access and the whole thing has to be mailed back manually. Anyway. Shikhondo. Shikhondo Exa had some QOL additions but it was mostly still the original game. The biggest thing was the new 9:16 playfield. Youkai Rampage is weird in that it's both an upgrade and a downgrade. It looks like they couldn't actually use any of the Exa specific additions, but they did add some new stuff that in turn the Exa version doesn't have. Things that are missing here from the Exa version include the ENG and JP voice acting, gameplay tweaks, added slowdown, bug fixes, some specific sprites, and the stage 2 boss having visible nips now (Mikado arcade always censors this whenever they stream it lol). Things that are new here is the addition of stage 6, the addition of Dual Mode, (different) new sprites, new shot animations, and the phase 1 of every boss having music now (instead of only the stage 5 boss). Very weird situation. Youkai Rampage has easily the most content but is missing some of that QOL that the Exa version has. It's also missing those nips. That's clearly worth the additional 5986 EUR. Not that you can even buy the Exa version anymore as it got delisted everywhere. Shikhondo itself always felt a little style over substance to me. It's carried super hard by its very cool art and presentation, but the bullet pattern design is a bit lacking in comparison. Stages in particular lack identity to them, making them all kinda blend together. Dual Mode lets you control both characters at once ala Imperishable Night. You can even do Malice Cannon, which is something I don't think they accounted for because it’s maybe a bit too strong. 9:16 looks kinda not great on a non-rotated monitor, as you can probably see in this video.
