The Junkers Ju52/3m 4k footage and rare Archive footage of the role of this airplane in the Battle of Crete. The Junkers Ju 52/3m is a German transport aircraft manufactured from 1931 to 1952. It had both civilian and military service during the 1930s and 1940s. In a civilian role, it flew with over 12 airlines including Swissair and Deutsche Luft Hansa as both a passenger carrier and a freight hauler. In a military role, it flew with the Luftwaffe as a troop and cargo transport and briefly as a medium bomber. The integrated footage shows the important role the Junkers had of capturing Maleme Airfield and ultimately Crete. The Junkers are shown dropping German Paratroopers in their thousands including supply drops at critical times throughout the battle. The Battle of Crete, "Operation Mercury", was fought during the Second World War on the Greek island of Crete. It began on the morning of 20 May 1941, when Nazi Germany began an airborne invasion of Crete. Greek and other Allied forces, along with Cretan civilians, defended the island. After one day of fighting, the Germans had suffered heavy casualties and the Allied troops were confident that they would defeat the invasion. The next day, through communication failures, Allied tactical hesitation and German offensive operations, Maleme Airfield in western Crete fell, the footage in the video shows Junkers in action enabling the Germans to land reinforcements and supplies to overwhelm the defensive positions on the north of the island. Allied forces withdrew to the south coast. The Battle of Crete was the first occasion where Fallschirmjäger (German paratroops) were used en masse, the first mainly airborne invasion in military history thanks to no small part to the role of the different Junker variant used extensively in the Battle. @OFFTRACKPLACES Aircraft Filmed by Off Track Places Military Aircraft - Krakow Aviation Museum, Poland
