Returning to Tech Down Over is SomeGadgetGuy, Juan Carlos Bagnell! Tune in for a great interview where we talk about audio tech, health, and the future of music consumption! First, we talk with Juan about earbuds. To start, we talk about recent wireless Bluetooth earbuds. Nowadays, you can find some really high-quality drivers in earbuds. However, there are downsides as well. They're more expensive than corded headphones, they need charging, and they can be worse for your health. Because they let in more outside sound, if you're in a noisy place with your earbuds, you'll tend to turn them up. Juan Carlos also talks about neckbands, and how they're convenient because much of the cabling bulk is out of your way. For example, he shows his pair of 1MORE headphones. Cleaning your earbuds is next on the agenda. Juan Carlos recommends using sanitary handwipes to clean your earbuds, and describes how to practice good headphone hygiene. We also go into the underground culture of using smartphones and dedicated digital audio players for higher-quality music listening. He describes how certain LG phones, for example, are built with hi-fi ready components. In contrast, Juan Carlos notes that using a classic pair of Beyerdynamics with an iPhone doesn't really buy you better sound. Next, we cover the acquisition of AKG by Samsung. From what Juan Carlos has found, this hasn't necessarily improved Samsung devices' sound quality to an audiophile level. He sees this as a bit of a shame—AKG has made some of his favorite headphones and microphones. For example, the C414 ULS is one of his all-time favorite mics. Overall, Juan Carlos sees the current state of audio listening equipment as a sort of renaissance. We've gotten to the point where digital devices are able to reproduce sound at very high fidelity and take advantage of classic headphones and hardware.
