According to Holy Tradition, the feast celebrates the fulfillment of a vow by Saints Joachim and Anna, the parents of the Virgin Mary, who, after their daughter's miraculous birth in their old age, brought the three-year-old Mary to the Temple in Jerusalem to be consecrated to God's service. The central theological significance lies in the belief that the young Mary was destined to become the Living Temple of God, the vessel who would bear the Incarnate Word, Jesus Christ. Her entrance into the Temple, and especially her being led into the Holy of Holies by the priest Zacharias (a detail emphasized in tradition), signifies her unique preparation and dedication as the ultimate sanctuary, replacing the physical Jerusalem Temple as the dwelling place of God among humanity. This commemoration is celebrated because it highlights Mary's unparalleled holiness and obedience, which made her worthy to become the Mother of God, or Theotokos. By presenting her to the Lord, her parents set her apart for a life of prayer and spiritual growth among the virgins. More importantly, the feast proclaims that through Mary, the prophecies of the Old Testament concerning God dwelling with humanity are fulfilled. As the liturgical hymnography states, "The Virgin appears in the temple of God, in anticipation proclaiming Christ to all." Therefore, the feast marks the transition from the Old Covenant, centered on the Temple of stone, to the New Covenant, centered on Christ and His Mother, who is the first and greatest example of a human being becoming a spiritual "tabernacle" of the Holy Spirit.
