#fishing #spanishmackerel #topwater In this video, I catch my PB (personal best) spanishmackerel on a #topwater popper lure! The best part? I was using my 2500 Shimano Sedona on my St. Croix, 7' ML spinning setup. This made the fight even better, as Spanish Mackerel are not know for hard fights. There is nothing like catching a fish on topwater and seeing that topwater hit while fishing and this one did not dissapoint. This was my largest Spanish Mackerel and I'm so happy I caught it on topwater! Catching Spanish Mackerel on topwater lures can be exciting because these fish are aggressive feeders and can strike fast-moving surface lures with spectacular strikes. Here are some tips to help you catch Spanish Mackerel using topwater lures: Choose the Right Topwater Lure: Small, fast-moving lures like pencil poppers, small poppers, or stickbaits (3 to 5 inches) work well. Bright colors such as silver, chartreuse, white, or blue mimic baitfish and attract attention in clear or slightly stained water. Fish During Peak Feeding Times: Early morning and late afternoon or evening are prime times when Spanish Mackerel hunt near the surface. Look for surface activity—jumping baitfish or boiling water—which signals active feeding. Use a Fast Retrieve: Spanish Mackerel are fast and aggressive, so a swift, erratic retrieve with intermittent twitches or pops mimics fleeing baitfish. Add quick pops or short pauses to provoke reaction strikes. Cast Near Structures and Schools: Fish near piers, rocks, jetties, beaches, and areas where baitfish concentrate or current funnels. Spanish Mackerel often travel in schools, so targeting these spots increases your chances. Use Lightweight Tackle: Use a light to medium spinning rod with a fast action tip for sensitivity and quick hooksets. Use a 10-20 lb fluorocarbon or braided line for strength and good lure action.
